UK Firms not Ready for Disaster Recovery

In the United Kingdom, as in the United States, companies are confident their disaster recovery plans are in good shape. The statistics tell a different story. British online data storage vendor reports that two-thirds of firms never test to see if they are actually able to restore from a backup. Three quarters do not use encryption, making their data stream potentially accessible to unauthorized users. For individual users as well as for large corporate entities, it is essential to test the restorability of backups form time to time. This writer has performed far too many data recoveries for companies and individual users who had religiously made backups only to find out their backups were either missing essential data or were not able to restore at all. As Ronald Reagan famously said, “Trust but verify.”
