Death Threat Spam
There's a (relatively) new hoax email circulating. It's one that works particularly well with the stilted English one often sees in scam email and it's kind of scary. Although according to Snopes.com, it's been around since at least 2006, I have only just heard about it. There are various wordings, but what it comes down to is an email that says a hitman has been hired to kill you and has been following you around. A second look at the email should let you know that there isn't really any info in the email that identifies you (aside from a lucky guess at your email address or name) and should help you identify it as a fraud. The FBI talks about this scam at their New E-Scams and Warnings page
You know the old saying, "just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you"? Well, this time, they're not!

Mr. Burgess makes a reference to www.snopes.com, which is an excellent source on current email and other types of Internet scams. A couple of other resources dealing with email/phishing scams are:
http://OnGuardOnline.gov and,
www.lookstoogoodtobetrue.com
If you are a victim of one of these scams and are a bit embarrassed about contacting local law enforcement to report the crime, file a complaint online at www.ic3.gov.
